Introduction<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u201cTaajdaar-e Haram\u201d is a devotional qawwali famously performed by the late Sabri Brothers, Ghulam Farid Sabri (1930-1994) and Maqbool Ahmed Sabri (1945-2011), from Pakistan. Their live rendition of this hymn is rich and complex, containing excerpts from poems written by diverse authors in different languages and time periods.<\/p>\n

This qawwali is a\u00a0na\u2019at\u00a0<\/em>(praise of the prophet Muhammad), since it serves as a plea to Muhammad to bestow his grace and mercy upon the needy. According to the 1970 record released by the Sabri Brothers, the lyrics are by Hakim Mirza and H.B. (Habib) Madani, both of whom are difficult to identify. Some report that the Hakim Mirza who wrote this\u00a0na\u2019at\u00a0<\/em>is the same Hakim Mirza who was the brother of the Mughal emperor Akbar. As the Urdu used in \u201cTaajdaar-e Haram\u201d appears to be modern, it is unlikely that he wrote the main poem, but he may have written some of the Farsi verses interspersed within the qawwali whose authorship remains unclear. Given the\u00a0takhallus\u00a0<\/em>(pen name) in the last line of the main poem, it is clear that someone named Habib wrote those verses.<\/p>\n

The Sabri Brothers insert pious pleas by other renowned poets in their version of this qawwali. Towards the beginning, they recite a Farsi line from the poem \u201cMarhaba Sayyidi Makki Madani\u201d by Muhammad Jaan Qudsi Mashhadi (-1646), the poet laureate of the Mughal Empire under Shah Jahan. Later on, the Sabri Brothers include an Urdu\u00a0na\u2019at\u00a0<\/em>by the Pakistani poet Muzaffar Warsi (1933-2011), who is famous for writing the\u00a0hamd\u00a0<\/em>(praise of God) titled \u201cWohi Khuda Hai\u201d. Another Farsi excerpt is from Maulana Jami (1414-1492), a Sufi theologian and poet from modern-day Afghanistan. There are also a few lines in Arabic from a poem attributed to Zayn al-Abideen (659-713), a descendant of the prophet Muhammad and the fourth Shia imam.<\/p>\n

Two other excerpted poems are notable for their bilingual verse. One is the classic\u00a0ghazal<\/em>\u00a0\u201cZihaal-e Miskeen\u201d, attributed to Ameer Khusrau (1253-1325), who was a Sufi disciple of Nizamuddin Auliya and the father of qawwali. It alternates between Farsi and Hindi lines. The other is \u201cAi \u2018Arab Ke Kunvar\u201d, a poem is attributed to Bhai Mardana, a companion of the Sikh leader Guru Nanak. Its structure contains two lines in Purbi (a dialect of Hindi), one line in Farsi, and another line in Purbi. These works of Khusrau and Mardana both follow the Sufi trope of a woman lamenting her separation from her beloved. In the context of this qawwali, it symbolizes the believer\u2019s separation from Muhammad.<\/p>\n

In \u201cTaajdaar-e Haram\u201d, the speaker asks for a glance of mercy from the prophet Muhammad in order to cleanse his sins, rejuvenate his faith, and give him strength. The speaker beseeches the morning breeze (saba<\/em>) to carry his prayer to Muhammad\u2019s tomb in Madinah. If the prophet accepts, wine will metaphorically flow forth, filling all the believers\u2019 empty goblets. The prophet Muhammad acts as the wine-pourer, i.e. the guide facilitating believers\u2019 relationship with the divine. Specifically, he is mentioned as the wine-pourer of\u00a0Kausar\u00a0<\/em>(or\u00a0Kawthar<\/em>). According to Islamic tradition,\u00a0Kausar\u00a0<\/em>is a body of water (sometimes called a \u201clake-fount\u201d) in heaven that God promised as a gift to Muhammad. In \u201cTaajdaar-e Haram\u201d, when Muhammad fills the cups of his followers with the waters of\u00a0Kausar<\/em>, he is fulfilling their material and spiritual needs.<\/p>\n

The different puzzle pieces of \u201cTaajdaar-e Haram\u201d employ different metaphors and styles, but are united by the theme of seeking guidance and mercy from the prophet Muhammad. * The\u00a0daaman\u00a0<\/em>that is filled refers to a concept similar to that of the\u00a0jholi\u00a0<\/em>in\u00a0\u201cBhar Do Jholi\u201d<\/a>. Literally, a\u00a0daaman\u00a0<\/em>would be the hem of a long South Asian garment. Folding up and holding one\u2019s\u00a0daaman\u00a0<\/em>to form a sort of pouch is a way of begging for money. Since Muhammad is believed to have been generous to the poor, this qawwali mentions how he fills up the\u00a0daaman\u00a0<\/em>of all those who come to his door. At the same time, the other meaning is that everyone is metaphorically a beggar asking for and receiving the prophet\u2019s alms, i.e. his forgiveness.<\/p>\n
