With sincerity, he articulates his sorrow that God allows innocent people to suffer and evildoers to prevail on earth. He also points out the apparent meaninglessness of how God will judge humans, when the latter are powerless and everything that transpires is, by definition, part of God\u2019s plan.<\/p>\n<p>Examining the abundant references in \u201cTum Ik Gorakh Dhanda Ho\u201d, there are three main categories. The first group includes prophets and key religious figures: Adam, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, and Husayn bin Ali are all mentioned. The poem alludes to miracles and incidents from their life stories. The second group consists of prominent Sufi mystics: Mansoor al-Hallaj, Shams Tabrezi, Sarmad Kashani, and Sultan Bahoo. According to tradition, the first three were executed for their heterodox beliefs. Third, the poem references the heroes and heroines of romantic folk tales from Arab, Sindhi, and Punjabi literature: Laila-Majnoon, Heer-Ranjha, Sassi-Punnu, and Sohni-Mahiwal. All of these romances are tragedies, in which the titular couples meet their end in the pursuit of love, much like Shakespeare\u2019s Romeo &amp; Juliet.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the poem, after listing his grievances, the bewildered poet begs to see just a small glimpse of the divine. That would be enough evidence for him to accept God\u2019s existence despite all the paradoxes and dilemmas. The poem ends before explaining whether or not that wish was granted, leaving it as an open question for the reader\u2026<\/p>\n<p>The most famous rendition of \u201cTum Ik Gorakh Dhanda Ho\u201d is the qawwali version by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (1948-1997). The transcription and translation below follow his recording, which is not necessarily in the same order as Naz\u2019s original poem. Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan also recited some extra lines from other poets, such as Mirza Ghalib (1797-1869) and Hairat Shah Warsi (1887-1963).
